I mean most of their problems and bugs seem entirely caused by physics and navmeshing. So why scrap them? it literally acomplishes nothing other than making you spend a few extra years completely re-writing parts that had nothing wrong with them. I mean even without knowing exactly how the engine works or what its problems are it seems to me that theres nothing wrong with the compenents that handle graphics or lighting, nor the parts that handle player movement or combat. Secondly even if most of your engine is completely unfixable and unsalvagable, which i gurantee you its not considering theyve made many successful games from it, you would still use the foundations of the engine which do the basic things that every engine does instead of re-writing it from scratch for no reason.īut again, there is no such thing as an unfixable or unsalvagable engine when its been used to create successful AAA games. The only people that do this are those that dont have their own engine.

The thing is a lot of people who seem to not know how engines work are deadset on suggesting that bethesda 'needs a new engine' which doesnt make any sense at all.įor starters making a new engine from scratch would take a shit tonne of time and money that is completely unnecessary when you already own an engine to use. They look to be taking a real shot at overhauling it properly. Given the amount of studios theyve acquired or made and the sheer amount of engine programmers theyve hired the over past few years though that doesnt seem to be the case this go around. Engines are higely complicated beasts that companies far larger than bethesda have spent years re-working to get to where they are, and given the size of BGSs studio around skyrim to fallout 4 (around 80-100+ i believe) it really is no wonder at all that theyve never re-worked it properly. The problem with the engine most likely had nothing to do with how old it is and everything to do with how theyve changed it between games. I can gurantee you that there is very little of it unchanged since it was even called GameBryo. They are made up of lots of components that control different aspects of the game which can be replaced or edited mostly independant of one another so "age" means nothing.
